UFCW Canada Local Union 102 member Steven Nadon is the second Canadian student to win this year’s prestigious UFCW International Scholarship, which is awarded annually to eight UFCW members or their dependents across North America. The scholarship covers $8,000 in tuition fees over a period of four years.

Steven works at the Embassy Suites in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he has done everything from bussing tables to working as a restaurant host to serving as a waiter.

He plans to study Concurrent Education at Brock University, where he hopes to earn a Bachelors of Arts degree and a Bachelors of Education. During his time at Brock, Steven will be majoring in English and Child and Youth Studies. He believes his education will allow him to succeed in becoming a high school teacher in senior English or French.

As UFCW International President Joe Hansen explains, “our union stands for more than just improving our members’ paycheques and benefits. The UFCW is about workers coming together to build better lives for themselves and to pursue opportunities,” Hansen says. “That’s why each year the UFCW awards several scholarships to UFCW members and their unmarried dependents.”
